If what Marissa said is true than the copper in the wood would most likely affect the plant but living in Bangkok I dont know what the conditions are like in the USA. We grow all our Vandaceous in baskets ( 100's of plants ) for ease of culture. I keep my private collection in hardwood baskets ( untreated ) & find that the roots attach themselves to the timber. I have been told that the timber used is the off cuts from teak wood furniture - before being processed & varnished etc.

Hi Karate Kid,

Ortho makes all kinds of insecticides. The one you mentioned is not Orthene. Orthene can be used safely on all parts of your orchid plants without causing harm, leaves, roots and flowers. Use it at 1 tablespoon of powder per gallon of water.

I found mine at a local orchid nursery, and have seen it at a local farm supply company. I have not seen it at any of the usual places like Home Depot or Lowes. What part of the US do you live in. If it's near here, in South Florida, I could suggest a place in the vicinity.

Broward Orchid Supply sells it...it is on their website. Here is the link. You might need to call them to see if they can ship it for you.

Good Luck!

I agree, thrips are probably your problem. I had the same thing about a year ago. by the way, I think wooden baskets promote thrips because of the algae growth that you get with high humidity. I am switching over to plastic baskets. Remember to repeat the spraying!
