Pics of Oranging Phal Leaves :( Plz HELP! - Orchid Board

Hi there All,

I truly needs some help with some plals that are turning Orange on me. I don't get why either? They have been outside for months, and even have current new Spikes on them. Seem to be healthy to me. But some leaves are popping up turning slight orange, and more orange daily!! Scares me to death of what's happening??! It was just one, now I count 3 phals doing it

What causes Orange leaves on Phals??

And, will this kill my babies??

I really think you're OK. . .Phals lose their bottom leaves and produce new ones at the top. They'll shrivel up and drop off.

I would only worry if the orange leaves were higher up.

Appears to me to be old leaves just dieing off. Everything else looks positive, like nice roots, nice top leaves. These guys don't keep their leaves forever! The reddish root tips mean pretty high light for Phals. In time the roots will quit turning red at the ends and go back to greenish.

BTW, you mention those Reds tips. Should I live by the rule on every chid I have hanging in my Chid Hotel? And cut back on the light on them all, with the blinds?? Or is Red tips Ok on All varieties? Still healthy??

Reddish root tips are natuaral with certain genera such as Pleurothalids. But with many others such as Phals, Neos, etc. the red usually (not alwasy) means quite bright light. I doubt you are pushing your Phals too far. Lots of us like to push the edge as it usually leads to good strong leaves and bigger blooms. I'm just saying watch the tips. Eventually, as the plants get used to the light, the tips should go back to yellow-green or green. By the way, what type of light are these located in? How strong? If these are right out in full southern sun next to Vandas, that may be the problem with the spots you show in your other post - sunburn. Bright light does not equal full sun for Phals.

Yikes!!! I can't tell ya that one? Sorry! Not a Pro here!
They're out in my Chid Hotel. With the shades rarely pulled down.

So if you can by the light that they might get with this picture? This pic was taken about 5:00 pm when the sun hits them from the west. Other wise, they have No direct sunlite.

OK, light probably OK. Do you have a light meter? Reflected light can sometimes zoom right up there. But if your screen is down during brightest part of day (say 11AM till 3PM) then you should be OK. I like to provide approx 2000 foot-candles light.
