Hi Ang,
The sugar ants themselves will not harm your plants; however sometimes they "herd" aphids and scaley bugs, so I'd keep a close eye out on them.

Hi Ross! No....the picture is way off....and it doesn't fly...lol....just runs super fast...lol. I think dave b hit it right on...they look like Predatory Running Mites!
