The Dendrobium Crisis

I've had this dendrobium for around 9 months or so and it's been doing really well, LOTS of new roots, a new cane that has been doing really well and everything! But about three or four days ago the base of the new cane turned black and soft and the cane is now hanging off the side of the pot...

What could have caused this?? I have been taking such good care of it and now it's trying to go the way of the dodo!
