It definitely sounds like crown rot- i have a huge mini lavender dendrobium that i watered in the shower and i kept forgetting to blow out the water. A couple of days ago, I noticed a lot of new growth. A day ago, I noticed a lot of black spreading and the new growth easily fell off. It also smelled stale. i had to cut off the growth below the infection with sterilized scissors and sprinkled with cinnamon. Act quickly- Jenn is right. fungus spreads very quickly.
I've had this dendrobium for around 9 months or so and it's been doing really well, LOTS of new roots, a new cane that has been doing really well and everything! But about three or four days ago the base of the new cane turned black and soft and the cane is now hanging off the side of the pot...
What could have caused this?? I have been taking such good care of it and now it's trying to go the way of the dodo!
Is there a possibility the new cane was cracked or broken at the base? I accidentally damaged a cane on one of my dends a few weeks ago while watering. I heard it snap but initially it didn't break all the way through. I left the cane on the plant and restricted watering for a few days to allow the broken area to callus and then waited to see what would happen. The broken cane still looks healthy but dropped off the main plant a few days ago. Now I have one healthy plant minus one cane...and one healthy rootless cane that has the potential to produce new plants from nodes along the stem.
I removed the bad cane but I don't have any Physan yet, so I'm just patiently waiting. If it spreads any further, I'll have lost the plant, . But se la vi...
Oh wow, NewGuy. You sound like me. But I am curious about Ranchnanny's response about the Listerine...does the (reg.) mean the original listerine, not the flavored stuff? Good luck NewGuy.
