I don't think I'm willing to risk my badonkadonk (you may have to look that little bit of American vernacular up Des) so I'll try out some of Cheryl's Bayer stuff first.

Do I need to remind the rest of you that snails are a valuable component of the ecosystem? They are like Bears or Eagles (but slimy and a nuisance and unlikely to ever be a sports mascot, although Scottsdale Community College in AZ is the home of the "Mighty Artichokes" so you just never know). Snails have an important role to play in nature and we should leave them to it. Fortunately for us, their role is to make crunching/squishing noises under our shoes. So I think it works out well for everyone.

AaroM There no doubt about it though, if there is one orchid pest that is "bullet proof' it is the snail and the slug , i have been trying rid my garden and orchid growing areas of this pest for 30 years. If only i could recoup the cost of all the snail remedies i have spent over the years I would most probably be driving a Benz instead of a Corolla today!!

Aaron,
Just so you know....Epsom salt does them in AND a soak would add some micronutrients to the orchid mix. Roaches also HATE lysol products...soap is bad for spiracle breathers....I am enjoying a little mix that I created that uses cake icing, a little water and some borax...sure death. I mix it up in a double boiler (the crazy chemist/ cackling witch person comes out while I stir this up ) and I use an eyedropper to fill up straws and various ID's of plastic tubing. So far, so satisfying. Gets the ants and their horrible herds of scale. But, with any means of death, there must be a line of prevention, some consistency and "stragedy" (think Bugs Bunny fighting the Crusher.....)!

Okay I finally got a chance at a couple of formerly hidden snail. They too must have felt the storm approaching. Anyway I saw one outside. I ran inside and got my salt while a friend of mine looked at me quizically. Anyway, I came back out and said you wanna see something potentially very cool?
I poured probably more salt then needed but I wanted to be sure I didn't cheat him out of his sodium. Man it was cool, no smoke like I wanted, but lots of writhing coiling, coming out, going back in, gooing. Overall a pretty satisfying experience.
I found a second one and repeated the process, with pretty much the same result. I'll try to get pics on here soon.
