It looks to me like they got sunburn which caused a secondary infection. It's like with us, we get little sleep for a week, then someone sneezes on us and we are sick. Basically the immune system gets compromised, and you are susceptible to a host of things. Another thing, if you have had a lot of rain, water sitting on the leaves can magnify the effects of the sun, effectively boiling the area underneath it. You said that the roots look good, so that is what led me to my conclusion. Also I have grown Catts, and Dends outside for a couple of years, and my Catts sulked a lot when I had them with the Dends. I moved them this year to a shadier area, and they are growing like weeds. I am glad to hear that you have gotten the problem under control.
