Interesting photo, Susie. I would interpret that damage differently:

To me it looks like there was some mechanical damage to start with - that lighter area - and then the tissues near it were infected with some sort of toxin, whether that be bacteria, fungus, or whatever, with the end result being that melanoma-like "scarring".
