can an orchid survive from root rot?

I've rescued a phal from root rot before by following Ray Barkalow's sphag and bag method. http://firstrays.com/sphagnbag.htm You can find Superthrive in Walmart and Home Depot in the fertilizer section. Good Luck.

Ahhhh, yes, I remember reading about the sphag and bag, just never had root rot, dang hope I don't jinx my ongoing luck...good luck

It can't be saved if there isn't any green leaves on top just roots.

There could be a dormant eye on the live part of the stem. It can't hurt to try.

Hi! I guess we can try this one together and compare results! I'm new here but was asking advice on other forums. I had root rot and a rootless keikei. Darned cat knocked the plant over just when it started growing new roots and broke the WHOLE top of the plant off. Been trying my best to a least keep it alive long enough to get keikei roots. So I just did the spagh and bag thing. Ziplock bag with the keikei spike sticking out the top.I have a little moss clipped under the keikei that I spray a couple tomes a day. Best of luck to us both! I have had lots of success with the Sphag 'n' Bag and also the Sphag 'n' Seed Flat method. Usually I give the patients a spray or two of Physan20 during their stay in the hospital.

The keys to success are high humidity and warmth.

A plant has a lot of "survival instinct", so really wants to grow roots and carry on. Unfortunately, a rootless plant is unable to absorb moisture, so is in danger of desiccating and dying.

By enclosing it in a sealed bag and providing a moisture source to max out the RH, you slow that process and let the plant put its energies into growing those roots in that comfortable, warm, humid environment.
