Help with Resistant Scale Pest
Default Help with Resistant Scale Pest

Hello everyone, happy growing

Recently I was able to build a small roof (?) for my plants, although it protects them from the rain, and thanks to my collection of bromeliads under the table it maintains good humidity.

I have had this huge infestation of Scale. They are everywhere, I remove them manually and they appear again

What treatment can I use to treat them? and eliminate them from the root

I submerge plants in a bucket of water with 2-3ml liquid dish detergent added. I leave them for 2-8 hours. I invert plants with floating medium.

With heavy infestation there are lots of holes in the plant from insect bites, and a lot of water may enter the plant. I suggest you do this in two steps. First submerge for 2 hours, which will kill most of the scale. Wait a week to give another, longer soak.

Try it with 1-5 plants first to learn how to do it.

Systemic insecticides, such as Acephate, imidacloprid, Safari, and the like are best, but how you apply it is very important, as most insecticides only kill adults.
  1. Find a pesticide labeled for the pest.
  2. Mix it at the recommended concentration.
  3. Spray all exposed surfaces to dripping.
  4. Thoroughly drench the potting media.
  5. Treat all of your plants, not just those that appear to be infested.
  6. Repeat that two more times at one-week intervals.
With such a regimen, you will likely kill existing and newly-maturing adults before they can reproduce.

If, after another month, you see a resurgence, repeat the process using an insecticide have a different MoA.

Rubbing alcohol/isopropyl alcohol is an additional product you can use. It’s a spot treatment, and can help knock down the population, but you’ll need to pair it with another pesticide for significant control.
