After nearly 20 years of growing orchids (mostly Phals) I've finally lost my first Phal to stem rot, and I'm in shock at how quickly it happened!

I soaked the plant on friday, and it looked perfect. Fast forward to today and I notice that the youngest leaf is a bit wrinkled. I reach out and touch it and the entire crown falls to the floor.

When I had that happen I assumed that some rot was probably present for a while but just not visible under healthy tissue.

Your plant could still be viable if it has a good root system. Obviously that would mean a long road to recovery so not necessarily worth it unless it has value for you.

No, I don't think there's any way to save it sadly. The stem rot goes way down, and most of the roots are attached to rotten stem.

It was a cheap supermarket Phal that I bought in the spring because it reminded me a lot of my absolute favorite Phal which I lost to disease some years ago.

If that's the price to pay for the amazing 4 week vacation I had, there could be far worse.
