virus/ bacteria?? spotty leaves
Default virus/ bacteria?? spotty leaves

Hi Ive had this orchid for 2.5 months now. When I got it it was only the top leaf looking strange and didnt look as bad as it does now. I got it at the end of bloom and cut the spike and repotted hoping it would recover. It is an indoor plant. Only took outside for better light for pics. Any ideas what is is? Virus, bacterial??? Should I just pitch it? I got it for the pretty yellow and REEEEALY dont want to toss it.
No judgement for purching a sickly plant please. I thought it was just dark coloring of the leaf when i got it.

First, Welcome. I would suspect a bacterial issue. When you repotted it, did the roots look healthy?

The roots were perfect. Was the healthiest biggest plant I ever got... until the spotting got worse. Will it ever clear up. How do I treat bacteria?

I don't know what is the actual ailment... and so don't know how to treat. Hopefully some other members who are more knowledgeable will jump in. Typically damage to leaves doesn't go away, hopefully doesn't get worse.

What are your other conditions? Light? Temperature?

It's in an eastern window alone away from my other plants. Temp is good 68-74 range. I've googled and can't find anything that really looks like this.

I have had some plants that suddenly have some spotting. Although alarming, I talked to an orchid friend, who said the spotting was likely "sun burn" or a "tan". In other words, if you've noticed a lot more lighting where the plant normally lives, it may just be getting more light, which is what you might be seeing in the leaves. I'm not saying this is what it is; I'm merely offering another, potential cause that is likely not as harmful.

You said you also recently repotted this plant. I cannot help but wonder if its water/fertilizer/nutrient uptake is as effective in the new media. I liken it to how we may need to readjust after a move.

Just my thoughts.

Sometimes, if the orchid has certain ancestry, you can get leaves with patterns, certain hybrids better than others. The species Phalaenopsis Schilleriana and Phalaenopsis Stuartiana, for instance, both have markings on their leaves. Their offspring may or may not have some degree of coloration in their leaves.
A deficiency of phosphorous and cooler temperatures. or higher light with red/pink coloring in the flower can also cause reddish coloring in the leaves.

If the roots and leaves are healthy, the orchid is probably fine.
