Yellow Spots on Vanda leaves
Default Yellow Spots on Vanda leaves

I got some Vandas from a reputable Vanda seller about 5 weeks ago and two of them recently developed yellow spots on the lower leaves.

I noticed the yellow spots yesterday. This morning both of them have a yellow leaf with a black spot on the underside.

I have read all the old threads on this topic and have the Motes book (not the new one on just Vandas, the growing orchids in Florida one).

Since I am new to this, I thought I would check and see what treatment is recommended by those with more experience.

I apologize for the very blurry photo of the underside of the leaves with the black spots.

That may just be an old leaf ready to go. They drop leaves early if they get too cold or don't get enough water.

I hope that is the case! These two are the only two in my Vanda collection that are not growing new roots like crazy. They are growing them, but not as many and not as fast.

I gave them fertilizer with Cal-Mag in it this morning and will give Epsom salts in a few days.

Update: Today a third Vanda is showing the same yellow spots and one of the leaves, not a lower leaf, but one near a Keiki, also seems to be turning yellow. Is this normal or should I be worried?

I feel like such an inept orchid keeper.

Don’t feel terrible for inexperience. All of us are learning here no matter how many years we have been growing. Sometimes life hands us challenges that others can help with. There is a really great community here and people are always willing to share their knowledge. I have needed a lot of help, and they are great at solving problems that present as really challenging. Soldier on!

I don't know where you live. They probably came from someplace warm and very humid. In lower humidity, unless watered profusely, they may carry fewer leaves. An occasional leaf yellowing and dropping isn't too bad.

I live in West Central Florida and the came from Southeast Florida. Both very warm and humid.

I had been watering 2x per day, early morning and afternoon. Last week reduced to only mornings because the temperatures have not been getting quite so hot and it rains usually in the afternoons at least a little.

They live outdoors in a Crape Myrtle tree.

Then my guess is natural drop of older leaves.
