Oncidium leaves with whitish streaks underneath leaves Female
Default Oncidium leaves with whitish streaks underneath leaves

Hi all,

Now that Summers in full swing 2 of my oncidiums developed a whitish streak on/under leaves and one has creamish colored spots. Also one of my mini phals has 2 translucent spots on thw new leaf. Earlier there was only 1 but now I see 2. Is this something to worry about and what can I do to fix these problems?

House temperature is 70F. Grown in bark and sphagnum moss media. Water once a week in winter/ once in 5days during summer. Fertilize weekly with repot me Fertilizer.

First 2 and last 2 pic are of oncidiums and middle 2 are of the phalenopsis.

Is that cinnamon on the Phal?

I can't be sure but the white spots on the Oncidium might be mealy bugs or scale.

The spots on the Phal probably are from something biting the leaf. If they don't spread much it won't be a problem.

Those white streaks, being all aligned and parallel, were caused by mechanical “scratching”, not a disease (and in my opinion, not an insect, either).

Try to enlarge the first photo. It isn't linear.

Yes thats cinnamon powder on the phal. I dont think they are mealy bugs. Mealy bugs are usually very easy to identify. It just feels like some pest left some kind of residue that is whitish.I cant find any pests with a good magnifying lens. Are oncidiums more prone to diseases and pests than phals? I'm sharing some more pictures of couple of oncidiums that seem to have issues.

Oncidiums and Phals have different requirements; I wouldn't say one is easier to grow than the other. In most homes Oncidiums will be watered more often. They don't like to dry out but they do need air at the roots.
