Phalaenopsis orchid with large multicolored patch on leaf and fallen buds
Default Phalaenopsis orchid with large multicolored patch on leaf and fallen buds

I just got a mini phalaenopsis orchid from the clearance rack at Lowe's.

The roots are very healthy and hydrated, but one leaf has a large, discolored patch on it with black, yellow, and pale coloring. Some buds have fallen off, and the end of the flower spike seems shriveled. I can't find any pictures online that match the issue.

Any ideas on what it is and how to help? Should I remove the affected leaf?

It's hard to say since we don't know what kind of abuse it's had. That could be fungus or it could be sunburn.

I'd cut off that leaf about an inch below the damaged area. Then keep the plant warm. it should recover fine.

I'll buy damaged plants if I think it's mechanical or sunburn, but not if there might be fungus.

Since the damaged area is dry, I vote for sunburn. I'd take a single-edge razor blade, and slice away the damaged part, leaving the green part. The edges of the cut will turn brown, but if the leaf is otherwise healthy it will stay green, and be able to help sustain the plant.
