Are these another type of scale ?
Default Are these another type of scale ?

Hello everyone. Pretty strong wind knocked my orchid pots down and i have to repot them, then i saw these things. They look alike scale but not round shape, i can scratch them away using finger nail. I had some different types of orchids and these things only appear on my dendrobium. Hard to tell if there’s any damage from these things to the orchids after a very cold winter because my den. orchids grow very very slow this period. Anyone had these things before please ?

Hard to say from the photos. Looks to be something scale-like in appearance if not a type of scale. Not all scale are round. I have cottony cushion scale in my yard and they look nothing like the round armored scale. Without knowing where you are in the US, this page has good info about the types of scale found in California and likely elsewhere in the US, though your area may have species not included if you're in a wildly different part of the country. From there you should be able to figure out what you have, or what to lookup online to figure it out.

I'll leave the treatment advice to people that grow these in case they can't tolerate some of the regularly suggested products.

Thanks for the info. I forgot to add location Bonita, north of Texas. I had scale on my orchids years ago from an infected orchid bought online. I used alcohol to rub them away then neem oil monthly as a prevention. It’s been a while since i last saw scale on my orchid. This time they look like male scale to me except in brow/black color instead of white/yellow, oh and they’re very dry when rub away, almost nothing inside. Anyway, those orchids were isolated from the rest 2 days ago, still waiting to have time working on them.
