dry rot in laelia pseudobulbs
Default dry rot in laelia pseudobulbs

Hello all,
I'm a beginner with orchids, have read some but it's no substitute for experience.
Where I live in Melbourne an orchid grower has been liquidating his business, and in the process I've bought a few laelia cheap with very little provenance. Most appear to me very healthy, but one appears to have some serious problems. There is definite rot in pseudobulbs and most others are spotted black. Some black marking on leaves as well. What gives me some hope is that the rot is very dry and fibrous, not soft at all. The roots appear very healthy with active growth (it's late summer here). I'm wondering/hoping if it's frost damage that hasn't become fungal, but I don't have the experience to tell.
I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm obviously keeping it separated and watching and documenting the spots closely. If it is a problem that's going to progress I have no hope, as most of the plant is marked in some way or another. Any advice?

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

The leaf doesn't look frightening. The plants have been grown hard. Such spots can happen with lots of light. If they don't spread there is nothing to worry about.

The pseudobulb issues all look as though something has chomped them. I wouldn't worry about that except there may still be bugs, slugs or snails in the medium in the pots.

I think it's likely the plants are healthy.

Thanks estación, that's very heartening. I'll still keep it isolated for a while just in case, good practice anyway. I've repotted it (unnecessarily, I hadn't realised how leggy laelia are), all the roots looked very healthy. It's from quite a large nursery that's being fully cleared out, a lot of suface damaged stock going out so highly possible it's pest damage. I'm not fussed about it if it's just cosmetic

Tome, it looks like old damage that can be (mostly) ignored - but obviously keep an eye on them to look for changes.
