My advice was more applicable to an indoor greenhouse environment with many type of orchids. For outside control where the pests are endemic, I would look into natural controls like predatory mites and ladybugs.
Pyethrins and spinosad are the best pesticdes against thrips. If you go the pesticide royute, you have to rely on contact pesticide because systemics do not concentrate in high enough quantities in flower tissue to be effective. However, they can't be used in combination with mites or ladybugs.
