Something eating my denrobium?

I am in UK and the plant is indoors, with others, with min 13 degrees C at night and 25 max during the day.

I have been away for three days and come back to holes! I have checked the plant and can see nothing!



Any ideas? What treatment please?

Insect damage or possibly snail damage? See any snails in the medium? Or a slime trail on any leaves?

Or slugs.. They can be harder to spot than snails, but check the plants in the evening. They also hide in the medium. Even if you can't find them, a repot into fresh medium may be a good idea.

That looks like slug or snail damage. Bush snails are tiny dark brown things, half the diameter or less of a pencil eraser. They hide in the medium during the day. They come out at night to feed, when you might find them with a flashlight. Submerge the plant, pot and medium in a bucket of water and see whether any crawl out to avoid drowning.

They and their eggs can be killed by pouring strong cooled coffee through the medium. Water the plant well before, so the roots are saturated with water. Drain, then pour through the coffee. Repeat the watering in an hour to rinse out the coffee. Some OB members have reported root damage with coffee, but I haven't seen it when I did the presoak and rinse.

So I stayed up last evening after all your advice. At about 11:30 I found the monster, a small snail making it’s way up the pot!

Moral of the story - don’t leave the watering can inside the house! It brings things with it!

Snails are like black snakes or mice. If you see one, be assured there are more. Try a jar lid with beer in it. It really attracts the little buggers.
