I find YetAnother's description of how they're grown in Singapore and NOG just fascinating. Similar to the reedstem epis that grow along the side of the roads and get whacked back with machetes... when I hear about that the visuals were just delightful. Now I have another visual... a long line of T posts and barb wire (which we already have) lined up with a bajillion of those. Would be a really cool sight... until the snows came.

I guess, I can throw out a fun fact...

In the wild, one of the parent plants, (Papilionanthe hookeriana is known to grow on top of tall vegetation above swamp water.

During summer it resides on my deck in full sun (zone 10a) and I water it with a spray bottle, also for convenience, and because it is a long stretch from the hose bib.
Oh, hey, if something I said made you think i was questioning the provenance of the plant then I apologize, I didn't mean that at all. I just mentioned the wood because folks here in Singapore don't normally grow it mounted to wood. I only posted the photo of my clones as I thought you might be interested to see them, not to suggest in anyway that you did anything wrong by getting a cutting! Really sorry if I gave that impression!

As this plant is the national flower of my wifes home country, and because I harbor this vague hope that I'll be the first person to get one to flower in Amsterdam (not that id ever be able to prove it) and probably because i managed to kill mine, I have a deep affection for the plant and anyone who grows them.

What you say about cuttings makes sense, people here just chop off parts of the plant to start new ones, and they grow vigorously. Full sun sounds fine, at SBG they are completely unshaded where they grow, and the latitude here is 1'N (eg almost exactly on the equator.)

As Roberta said, the plant is not a protected species at all so no worries about that.

I wish you the best of luck with yours! Just be ready for it to get much bigger, taller than you. :-)
