True! I reckon that the 'ice cube' thing is ridiculous. If people can just apply water 'normally' - easy to do - then going down the ice cube path is just ridiculous. No problem with somebody conjuring the idea of ice-cube watering of orchids. The problem is with that 'seller' asking or recommending a bunch of people to follow with it. Aside from ineffective and orchids getting wiped out due to issues with this approach --- the need to make ice cubes - just for the purpose of watering orchids - is silly.
As for that cavity in the bulb ------- if it is all dried up, then it's certainly possible for that bulb to just keep on surviving - and continue to just grow nicely. If it's not soft and mushy, then it should be ok. If it happens again to more bulbs, then one approach is to set up a video camera and motion sensor to see what is happening.
