Sunburn should hit the leaves first before it hits the stem. If the brown part is soft, wash your hands, then cut it out before it spreads to the stem, in my opinion. That kind of looks like Erwinia.
Depends on the angle of the sun. Also, older Cattleya alliance plants frequently turn firm and brown as they gradually die.
