Brown spots on leaves
Default Brown spots on leaves

I recently received this Dendrobium bracteosum v. tannii and noticed these spots on several of the leaves. What is this? I contacted the seller regarding this and am waiting for a reply.

Looks fungal. You can just keep an eye on it... if they dry up and don't spread, no worries. If they start to spread, a fungicide might be in order. On the assumption that you'll hear fro the seller soon, I'd suggest not treating until you do hear from them - if an adjustment is what they suggest, you'd want the plant to be as you received it. I suspect that it was just cold water splashing on leaves, in which case it won't progress to a bigger issue.

Another note... these tend to bloom on older, leafless canes (though they may also bloom on canes with leaves). So loss of a few leaves isn't going to harm blooming. And of course, don't cut old canes until they are truly shriveled and you're sure they're permanently dead - because they can bloom even when they look like they're on the way out.

Thanks, Roberta. Does look fungal to me and it seems to be spreading. Still waiting to hear from seller. I quarantined the new orchids I received including this one and now it's separate from even the orchids it came with. I would say that most of the leaves have the spots both on the front and the back. There is some new growth and I don't see any spots on that at this time. I'm taking your advice and not doing anything until I hear from the seller.

I have a few other Dendrobiums and none of them have ever had anything like this spotting.

Heard back from seller and was instructed to remove the spotted leaves which had also begin to turn yellow.
Was also told to give the plant a good watering. Did both and will wait and see what happens.
