Brown Spots and Yellowing Patches on Epi hybrid Male
Default Brown Spots and Yellowing Patches on Epi hybrid

I recently bought a few Epis and most of them were fine, but one of them has several yellow spots on newer leaves as well as a prominent brown spot on the newest leaf. I don't think it's any sort of rot or insects, but I don't really know how to identify or treat it if it is a bacterial/fungal/viral infection. Also, considering I just bought it, is this something I could contact the nursery for a refund or replacement? Any advice would be helpful.

Did it arrive like that? It looks like be sunburn. Are the areas soft and moist, or firm?

Thank you for your reply! Yes, it arrived like that, and the spots are all firm, indistinguishable from the other parts of the leaf.

From experience: Mine has done that. I just cut off the effected parts. These are rapid growers. It should, as mine has, just out grow the problem. It doesn't seem serious to me.

I would send those photos to the supplier right now. and explain your concerns. It is likely to grow out of it, but if the problem spreads quickly, you should get a refund.

Thank you for your suggestion. I did contact the greenhouse and they sent over a replacement, which I'm pleased with. But, I would still like to keep the initial plant alive, and it seems like its condition has worsened. The top two leaves from the oldest stem have fallen off and the leaves on the other stem are also blackening and falling off (these leaves were completely fine before). And, all of the other orchids I purchased at the same time are doing well, so I don't think my regiment is the cause for it. At this point, I don't think it would be sunburn because leaved that were previously fine are now blackening and falling off, but I am curious as to what it might be.

Here are my non-professional thoughts. If it were mine I would cut below those leaves dust with cinnamon set it to the side and watch it. If it's still alive when the weather gets nice put it outside gradually in the sun and see what happens. Mine is tough as nails. I had an orange one that I wasn't crazy about, I took a cutting off of it, and threw the mother plant in the trash bin in the greenhouse where it laid for months and when I took out the trash it was still alive. So don't give up.

And if sympathy does any good, that does look like something bacteria, viral or fungal to me. This advice is worth what you paid for it.
