Default Epicattleya Rene Marques cold damage

Hi Everybody!

Just received this Epicattleya Rene Marques by mail from an Ebay seller, and although it was packaged well, it seems for me that it suffered a lot from cold during transport (4 days), whereas strangely the much smaller and thin-leaved Stanhopea tigrina survived in the same box without any problems).

Pics

Will this plant recover? What should be the next steps?
e.g. repotting in a new dry medium? cutting leaves already, or wait and see how these blackish lesions expand or not?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

Your photo app demands I either download the app or use Chrome to view. Neither is an option for me. Try uploading your images to OB.

It is cold damage. I would give it normal care, and not cut anything off yet. The dead parts will eventually dry up. If the rhizome is alive the plant may recover, but it may be 2-3 years before it flowers.

It asked me whether I wanted to do those but it was optional. I was able to see them on Imgur.

Thanks! Fortunately only the foliage seems affected, and the smaller former canes did not suffered any damage, so I keep the fingers crossed for a faster recovery, 2-3 years seem veeeeerrrry long time

Will this lesions not spread if not removed? Can it be repotted (and maybe the roots soaked in Kelpmax) or would this mean too much of stress right now? Should I water it as usual?

Thanks!

I totally agree with ES, don't cut anything. Any spreading you see will be continuing response to cold damage. The damaged leaves will eventually just drop, but they may be able to photosynthesize in the meanwhile. As for the 2-3 years... orchids teach patience. They don't do anything fast. It does look like you have some leaves that didn't get blasted, and that will help. As far as plant getting damaged and the other not, there is likely a difference in the tolerance of the plants... Renee Marques is pretty much of a warm grower, many Stanhopeas can tolerate quite a bit of cold. (And if they do loose leaves, they grow new ones, they do some of that anyway)

I concur with my esteemed colleagues...

Keep a close eye on the tissues near the damage. If it becomes infected and it starts to spread, cut it away and dab the wound with cinnamon powder.
