two plants, two different things

Hey,

pretty self explaining, they stick on 2 of my Epidendrums and are easy to snap off.






while on my Paphiopedilum



looks almost the same but not possible to take off so easy (are those air roots?)

Anyway, does someone has an idea what that could be?

They look like snails. Look up some photos to compare, or look at these with a magnifying glass.

They can be treated with strong coffee. First brew strong coffee. Let it cool. Water the plant thoroughly so the medium and roots are completely wet. Now pour the coffee through the pot so everything gets wet with coffee. Let it stand for a couple of hours, then flush the pot with fresh water.

You might need to repeat this if not all the eggs are killed.

If you only have a few present, you can remove them and then wipe that area with a q-tip dipped in alcohol.

For a more thorough treatment, you’re going to need a systemic insecticide. I am a fan of Azamax, but I have also recently used the “BioAdvanced” 3-in-1 Insect Disease & Mite control. The label says it’s effective on scale crawlers (juveniles).

No matter what you use, apply it thoroughly 3 times at one week intervals.

I've had brown scale but never that big-maybe I destroyed them before they grew. But still not quite convinced that's what it is. Also had snails to deal with(coffee works btw) but again I'm wavering!

I was able to blow the picture up on my iPhone, which has a much greater resolution than my PC monitor - it's definitely scale.

I do have two Epidendrum plants that are infected.. I've checked today others but they seem OK. I was worried about the Cats bc some of them have old leaves that looked somewhat suspicious but I think thats just the cycle.
However, I've ordered today the 3-in-1 Spray and plan some intensive treatment in the next few days. I've separated the Epis already.

OT, I've received a package of new plants a couple of days ago and found a 5mm snail in it. Is that concerning? I generally don't freak out with every little thing that happen (its nature, isnt it) but am now a bit alarmed since what just happened.
