I've not had to try coffee on my orchids (touch wood) but I can testify to its effectiveness against snails.
When I moved to my present house about 5 years ago the garden was completely barren with dry stone walls, as were the fields surrounding it. I took this pic of a dead little tree in the next field, covered with snails mainly on the northern side. A local told me they live in the drystone walls and also go up any growths to escape the heat at ground level. Fair enough, until I got my garden started at which point about 1 million snails descended on it overnight, attracted by fresh growth and moisture. I didn't want to use a snailicide (can't think of the proper word!) as they are the main food for the local hedgehogs (crunch/slurp) so I asked my local bar to save their coffee grounds for me. With the amount of coffee the Spanish drink it only took a few days to collect a very large bag. I sprinkled it around all my plants and young trees and as quickly as they had arrived the snails departed again. I repeat this every 3 or 4 months as a deterrent and it has been great. I never found a load of dead snails - just no snails!
(The locals also eat the snails - yuck! &#129326

Wow, the results of the treatment is amazing!

As far as eating them goes... do the locals prepare them the way the French do, with lots of garlic and butter? Garlic + butter can make ANYTHING delicious, I think.

Snails are great if they are prepared right. Sauté in butter loaded with garlic. Mmmmm!

Yep, in butter and garlic, which I love, but snails, no way!

I find it offensive that you assume French cuisine is built on garlic and butter.
It's really built on garlic, butter AND sugar.

Good snails are very hard to prepare, a parsley butter is just the base.
But yeah, since snails have no flavour of their own, it's basically a fancy excuse to eat flavoured butter.
