Paph Lynleigh Koopowitz - Black patches on leaves

Hello friends. I received this Paph Lynleigh Koopowitz yesterday from a seller on Etsy.

What do you think is going on with leaves? Treatable? Treatments advice?

The black "stuff" doesn't wash off and is not effecting the bottom leaves. It appears to mostly the darker green areas, leaving me to initially wonder if this could be natural coloration. However, it appears to be totally overtaking the second most recently grown leaf. I own both parents and neither have this black "stuff".

Or maybe burns on the higher chlorophyll areas?

CH - it really does appear to be mainly in the dark green coloured patches - regular darker green areas.

I can't say for sure, but I'm inclined to go toward burn.

The left-hand side of that leaf has some appearance of carbon residue ------ like after we finished a barbeque on a bbq plate.

Were the leaves exactly lke this when it arrived?

So far - doesn't appear to be disease or under attack though.

To me most of it does look like it's pigment. As far as owning both parents, my question would be is one of the parents of this cross a "dunkel" P. delenatii and is that what you also grow? I ask because the dunkel form of P. delenatii definitely has varying degrees of very dark almost black pigment on the upper side of the leaves in pretty much this same pattern.

The only thing that gives me slight pause is the way some of the pigment looks a little diffused on that one leaf with the most dark markings on it.

Delenati var dunkel was not called out as the parent but the darkening on the foliage of that variety sure looks a lot like this, thank you.

I wonder if the dark pigment is a reaction to high light conditions as the lower leaves do not have any of those markings...

It looks like a burn to me as well. But if the margins keep expanding, I would cut off the leaf.

Generally with P. delenatii dunkel, the lower leaves have much less or even no pigmentation on top aside from the margins. It's typically the newest top leaves that develop additional pigmentation beyond the leaf margins/edges and it fades over time. It can be related to higher light levels, but it seems/seemed to me that it was more of a variable individual trait. Some plants will simply have more pigmentation than others.

Most welcome CH. If the black substance appears to be building up ----- such as forming layers and if it appears to be taking out/destroying portions of the leaf, then Ray's suggestion of a copper treatment could put a stop to whatever it is. And if the spread just so-happens to continue ......... then cutting could be then be necessary to do (- mentioned by E.S.).

And also could ask the seller if they were aware of those particular features. All behind you on this one! Nice orchid!
