sperpich - the pics are a bit small, but those circled portions could be dried or drying sheaths, right?

For the images, see if you can make them around 1024 x 768 pixels (width by height), or even 768 x 1024 (width by height). A little larger.

'sheath' for a cattleya orchid is a sail-like structure that has the appearance of a leaf, but is for covering and protecting (or humidifying) the flower buds and spike that is often produced later within the sheath ----- except for really young orchids, where there can be a sheath, but not necessarily resulting later in flower bud/spike development.

Sorry about that. If you go back to the first post you can see it clearly there. Thanks

Thanks. The first post does show those sheaths. They don't look dried in the opening pics. And the sheaths are not leaves. But that's ok ------ at least the terminology is cleared up now.

If nice growing conditions are maintained, then there is certainly a chance for flower spikes to develop from within that largest sheath --- and maybe even a chance from the small sheath.

Those are called sheaths. They enclose flower buds. rbarata wrote about those. I wrote about dying leaves sprouting from the base, but you don't have that issue.
