Fungus on my Encylia alata?
Default Fungus on my Encylia alata?

One of this year's new growth of my Encyclia alata is rapidly browning (see pictures below). It started about 10 days ago at the pseudobulb and is moving up. The pseudobulb and leaves are dry, rigid, and do not smell bad. I therefore believe it is a fungal infection. However, I would appreciate a second opinion from the people in here with more experience than I do.

I am planning to repot the plant while removing a few pseudobulbs behind the one that is affected. Then I plan to treat the plant with Thiomyl for many weeks. Does that sound like a good plan?

Thank you for your help!

That's how Cattleya alliance plants lose new growths when they don't get enough water. Most Encyclia genus plants need more water than most Cattleya genus plants even though they're both in the Cattleya alliance. What you show is not due to fungus attack.

It's been hot in coastal Southern California. The rest of the plant also looks very dessicated. The pseudobulbs should be fat, tight and shiny green, not deeply furrowed and spindly.

Thank you estación seca!

I always have trouble keeping my E. alata fully hydrated in the summer, but it perks up when the temperature goes down. I currently wait for roots to be totally dry before watering; I will try to water a more often and see what happens.
