White spots on my (assumed) phalaenopsis
Default White spots on my (assumed) phalaenopsis

Hello all,

Please help me identify the cause of these white spots.

Also confirm this is a phalaenopsis orchid.

I don't feel this is mealybugs as there is no waxy residue, I may be mistaken as I am a orchid novice.

The orchid has recently been repotted.

Yes, it's a Phalaenopsis. Picture is a bit blurry, but possibly scale. Try taking a Qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol and see if it rubs right off. Someone with better eyesight will hopefully be along to assist as well.

The white dots look more that pits than bumps to me, which makes me think it’s mechanical (insect?) damage that’s done. If it doesn’t get worse, I’d not worry about it.

Hi Ray,

Yes they are more like pits than bumps.

Would you recommend trialling 70% isopropyl alcohol on a qtip?

Or should I invest in a pesticide if so what would you recommend?

I'll continue to monitor the progress but I am certain these spots weren't there 2 weeks ago and the orchid has been in my possession for about 6 weeks.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, I have ordered 70% isopropyl alcohol and will try this on affected areas.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Scale insects can leave pits like that. Yes, I would use alcohol and a cotton swab. See if any come off.

Yes, what I "saw"... sort of... was a mix of pits and of raised bumps in spots. Use the alcohol on the raised bumps to see if it's scale...if the bumps easily rub off, probably scale. No need try on the pitted spots, which are likely scale or insect damage of some sort.
