Ceramic IR heat Lamp?
Default Ceramic IR heat Lamp?

Hello,

I have been trying to solve a heating issue with my new grow room with the onset of winter upon us!

I was looking into different methods and my roommate who keeps reptiles suggested I use one of these ceramic heat bulbs but my concern is that it's emitting invisible light that will interrupt my 'chids night period!

Upon looking at the bulb, it appears to actually be made of ceramic so I'm curious if it has a ceramic "shell" in which case it should effectively block even the invisible light from the plants. Are there any pros here who can weigh in on this? Anyone who keeps reptiles that know if these guys are plant safe?

Thank you for visiting my thread! Here's a link to the product I'm talking about.

The "light" emitted by these is not usable by plants, so no worries on the photoperiod getting messed up. How big is your room, and how well insulated? How cold do you expect the ambient temperature of the room to be, and how warm do you want to keep the room? Without knowing these things it's impossible to say what it would take to heat your area. Those heaters are designed for spaces much smaller than I would consider a room. I would think they could do a decent job in terraria.

Perhaps a heating mat and a makeshift greenhouse would work.

Thank you Subrosa for that.

The room is rather small, only 8x8. It's pretty well insulated. I have a grated metal top table that my chids stay on, I was thinking of placing one of these beneath the table and allow the heat to radiate upwards, kinda like a high powered heat mat.

I'm trying to conserve energy, growing up I always found myself heating what I need. I'd heat myself and not the room so I'm trying to apply that to my 'chids, I want to heat them and not the whole space as I think it would be more efficient.

More efficient no doubt, but it makes for a touchier system as well. A few inches difference in placement can make a big difference temperature wise.

Thanks for your input. I think I'll attempt to place it rather close and use a rheostat to scale back to a preset temperature!
