Yes, you can so that but it takes up real estate which is why mine is "piped" in.

Well that makes perfect sense... Thanks Pilot!
Looks like I've got a little tweaking to do.

Default 5 disc fogger

All,

I have used the pictured 5 disc pond fogger for a number of years. The basin and lid are a plastic storage bin. The fan is a 12 volt computer fan blowing air into the bin. Water level in the bin is maintained by a float valve purchased from a salt water aquarium supply shop.

The piping for the mist is slip fit 2" pvc. There is a 2" x 4" adapter with perforations over the fogger to contain the fog, and direct it up the pipe. It is important that the whole thing is easily disassembled for monthly cleaning of algae. I use dilute bleach. I am about to add a small aquarium UV sterilizer to the bin to control algae growth.

The thing works and its cheap, but the monthly cleanup I could do without.

I use a single USH in a 150 gal riparium, sitting on a rock to keep it at the proper depth, along with a small store bought ultrasonic cool mist humidifier located above the enclosure and piped down. After running for a couple minutes the entire 36" x 36" x 27" enclosure is completely fogged in to the point of zero visbility.

Yeah, its funny this topic popped up. I just recently have been thinking of how to incorporate an ultrasonic fogger/mist maker into my growing setup for orchids. traditional humidifiers don't seem to really do the job because they don't really create a nice fog or mist like the ultrasonics do; the "humidity" they create just kindof dissipates in a short time and not to mention, they can be noisy things. The ultrasonic ones seem like they would work nicely so I just ordered one with the hopes of configuring or modifying it to work in my orchidarium. I was a little bit concerned though because I read something about them having certain operating conditions..anyone know if the depth an issue?? I see the 5 gal bucket thing, that's neat but will the fogger actually work right under that much water without being like choked out of something>? if so that would be cool. I thought of trying to find some sort of shallow but long container to set mine in so that it was at the right depth but had plenty of water in the res so it wont dry out. Any advice guys?

You can buy little floating gizmos designed to hold a single emitter at the proper depth from pond supply places. Making one couldn't be that difficult either. The one I use recommended about 1.5" of water.

I have several from Kelly's Orchid Supplies along with their deep water evaporation trays. If you've ever been to the Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas, you get that kind of volcano effect from them! There's a red light illuminating a like geyser of water with the ultrasonic mist falling away from it over the entire tray and off the sides.

The plants seem to love it!

Here's what I'm talking about:

Humidity tray:

I like that, was trying to think how to make something like this work for my kitchen window but I think it is too narrow. I got a small ultrasonic humidifier, works some but still not enough humidity.

I would love something like this in my living room but wonder about the splash.

I got trays like that but the brown ones from kelly's korner I use them in the living room. I am going to get a long narrow one for my kitchen window, I like them. Not sure if they help at all but do have a nice place to set things on.

As long as you put the humidifier (which is only like the size of a quarter or half-dollar) in the center of the tray, you won't get any splashing outside the tray. You may get some fog rolling off, but as long as you have good air circulation in the room, that shouldn't be a problem. Plus, if you have the tray crowded with enough plants, you hardly get any of that either.
