If you are a Mac user, I recently switched to Bento 3, a cheap, simple database software from Filemaker. You can easily build your own database (not too many calculator functions) but the big thing for me is that there are apps for the iPhone and the iPad. I can use my iPhone or iPad in the growing area, walking around, and then everything can sync together. I like being able to update blooming starts/stops, flower sizes/numbers, and comments about plants right by the plant instead of making notes to enter later. The mobile connection to the database is the neat thing. The interfaces are nice and Bento looks very nice on the desktop or mobile. You can import pictures of plants/flowers directly from iPhoto with a drag/drop.
