No, my neighbors think my husband is crazy. I tell them I can't get him to stop peeing out the upstairs window.

Only the DI resin removes anything in such a system. There is no prefilter that can take dissolved solids out of the water.

I couldn't find the thread to the bypass valve option, do you have a link to it?
Many systems don't have such an option. They way it is done is by putting a TEE in the flush water line, with one side going through the restrictor and the other goes through a straight piece of tubing, into which there is a valve. Both lines are then rejoined with another TEE, flowing to the outfall.

When the valve is closed, the system operates normally. When the valve is open, there is no pressure to push water through the membrane, so all the water circulates around the membrane, "scrubbing" it and flushing excess away. You let it run for a few minutes, the close the valve again.

One must also factor in the water used to produce and otherwise get the replacement filters to your door. The amount of water used per pitcher filter cartridge is likely much higher than you would expect, because you have to account for the water used in the original mining of the components, all the way up to the final rinse they get before they’re packaged.

Buying a long-lifespan countertop RO system will reduce your total water usage in the end. It will also generate less trash.

I installed an under counter RO system even though we’re renting because they’re so nice to have.

Many larger aquarium shops sell reverse osmosis water for less money than buying distilled by the gallon at the grocery store. Bring your own jugs.
