Humidifier filter additive

I was curious what others use to cleaning their humidifier filters with. The water in the reservior "evolves" quickly, and I'm just going to play it safe and empty/clean it daily.

I grabbed two extra filters with intent to replace them every 2-3 days, but wasn't sure what a good/economical soaking agent would be for them., so they can be rinsed and dried for reuse. I don't mind spraying a bit of bleach in the reservior and rinsing well, but that procedure would eat the filter material pretty fast.

I have no personal experience with this (don't even own a humifier) but maybe something like Physan 20 would work well in this situation?

Humidifiers I use are ultrasonic which has no filter but need a white vinegar cleaning or soak occasionally to remove hard water deposits. For me,this is a better way to go than having to buy filters since I've not heard they can be cleaned and reused.

Read the fine manual it came with. If you don't have it go to the manufacturer's Web site and look up your model. I'm sure they'll tell you how to clean the filter.

How do you know bleach would "eat" it?

The filters are a papery material, and sodium hypochlorite is caustic (I deal with a variety of caustics and acids at work).

Yes, I understand that (I retired from the chemical industry), but caustic materials don't necessarily degrade paper ones. I like the earlier advice of "check with the manufacturer."
