First let me say that I am an amateur orchid lover. Here's my experience, though, and I hope it helps.
My epidendrum was given to me in Paph mix, but I was told to put the plant in the ground. I do know they need to be in well drained soil. However, I live in Central Florida and epidendrums will survive on the south side of my house, in partial shade. I would either pot the plant in paph mix with an amount of soil (in a roomy pot), or mix some of the paph mix in with the soil and dirt if you are in a zone 9 or higher and can plant it outdoors.
My epidendrum is not finicky in the least, and I hit it with liquid orchid fertilizer once every couple of weeks, with its normal watering, and it seems lush and happy.
Good luck,
Jehannette
