Well the heat is starting here, and humidity is down to 30%... not too bad today, but worst will be on monday...

Have to go get some freezer packs today, the cooler growers outside are mainly in large class cylinders, so that is a good idea to use them... I can hang them over the side the cool can be contained in the cylinders at the hottest part of the day... thanks for the tip, leafmite!

Our local excellent aquarium shop, The Ocean Floor, has aquarium chillers on sale through Wednesday. I bet one of those could be used to chill a terrarium.

106 F / 41C is balmy summer weather here. A Cyrtopodium has been fine outdoors on the north side of my house. It gets direct sun from about 8 to 10 am, then from 2 to 6 pm, when it's hottest.

They keep revising our forecast down. They originally predicted 116 F / 46.7C for today, but our high was 109 F / 43C. Now they're predicting a high of 117 F / 47C as the maximum of this spell, tomorrow, rather than the 120F they originally predicted on Monday.

Well your all tougher than I, I would die I tell you, just die in that heat. It got to 92 yesterday and I had to stay inside. Not fit for man nor beast.

I think the weather has always changed and always will. Not a thing we can do about it but try and live with it.

We were out of town for father's day, got in late last night and it was still around 80... during the day it was 102... I watered and watered as soon as I got home... went to bed, woke up around 10 and it was already 97! This kind of heat is really really unusual for June in LA... I'm more than a bit concerned that this may be repeated later in summer...

Mind you, I've tediously chosen plants that can handle high temps and lower humidity, but also do grow higher humidity plants in glass cylinders/ containers as well... I took those inside where it's cooler. For the one's i left outdoors they were baking in direct sun, as they do get direct sun some parts of the morning, and I shifted them to shadier lower sections... I've been watering and shifting all day so far...

All I can say is if this is repeated more than a few times later in the year, I'm going to have to rethink the whole collection, because you can imagine how nerve wracking this is...

on a good note, many of the limited number of "cooler" growers I have actually look ok... but ya know with orchids, they can be slow to react and may start decline in a matter of a day or two...

should be back to somewhat normal tonight... temp drops to mid 70's and highs in mid 80's for rest of week... hoping and praying, at least...

Here it seems summer finally arrived, today we had 96 F (36ºC) and now it's midnight and temp is 72 F (22ºC).
HR was 20% min and 84 at night.

Forecast says it will get higher next few days and, next week, they are predicting 106 F (41ºC). Now I know what to do...

We were 118 F / 48C yesterday, briefly. Humidity around 5%. Night was breezy, 90 F / 32C. A dish with 2" / 5cm water under a seed sprouting pot evaporated overnight.

My portable evaporative cooler worked well in the sunroom. 70%+ humidity, not over 90 F.

Four people died exercising in the heat yesterday: 2 in Tucson and 2 in Phoenix. One was a 28 year old fitness instructor, bicycling with two physicians, who were unable to resucitate her. One hiker is still missing.

rbarata, sounds like LA weather, seems like we could grow the same plants?

estacion, wow that's brutal. Why would anyone go biking in that weather? I'm sure I'm not the only one asking... a tragedy. 5% humidity I cannot comprehend.

Glad the sunroom stabilized at a good hothouse level. I think many warm growers do well at 90 and swampy... even if growers often say 90 is upper limit temp wise. I'd definitely be growing cattleya violaceas if I had your sunroom...

at 20% humidity and 80's at night the night before the glass cylinders registered 60% humidity after a day of absolutely no watering (moss and water at bottom of each cylinder). not bad. kept a bulbo from blasting some spikes.

All in all, things made it through. I spent most of evening last night rearranging everything... because of all of sudden direct sun was burning leaves and spikes (things were positioned getting direct light throughout morning and afternoon). I didn't end up using any packs because they didn't fit in the cylinders or cases without too much too much work, considering how soon they'd melt... probably or may be trading off what ends up sulking through the rest of summer.

nights are suppose to be rather humid 70 degree weather and days in the mid 80's-90 for the next, hopefully, couple weeks...

You could change into something with the word oven on it.

We had 7% and 44ºC (111 F) a few years ago during more than two weeks. It's bearable but only to those that like hot weather. People who live under such conditions know how to go through and most know there are certain activities that might be dangerous. Exercise is one of them, especially in the hottest hours.

Sure, we both have mediterranean climate so conditions must be very similar through out the year.
Do you live near the sea?
I live more than 100 km (60 miles) from it so here is considerable hotter and dryer than in the coast line.

Humans on the Earth is nothing more than a blip in geological history. Earth is a living, dynamic planet and the only reason humans evolved and thrived is because the Earth has been in a warm cycle. Had that last ice age lasted longer, it could've wiped us out. Given the historically shifting climate of the planet...we should expect it to continue to shift.

Personally, I'm just happy that "imminent" dreaded ice age the climatologists were screaming about back in the '70's hasn't happened. Rest assured, an ice age would be far more detrimental to our species.

BTW - La Nina, folks...La Nina. Keep those a/c units in good working order because it's going to be a hotter than normal summer for most of us. All except some of those lucky folks along the Gulf. I think I'll move to the Miami area for the summer. XD
