Got Some New Bloomers Coming
With the Encyclia odoratissima and the mini-Nobile hybrid the only things I know of that are in bloom right now, I decided to do a quick and dirty inventory of my species and yard orchids.
Species:
Picked these up at the GH closeout.
Dendrochilum wentzellii
I was worried that I might loose it.
It has now begun 2 spikes.
There may be more coming, or they'll be new growths.
It is much smaller than the Dendrochilum magnum and will have reddish blossoms.
Maxilaria tenuifolia
I have 2 mounts of these.
The older has smaller PB's, doesn't seem to be as vigorous as the newer acquisition and has not begun any buds yet.
The newer one has several inflorescences started with 2 blossoms open and reeking of coconut.
Ornithophora radicans
It is starting a few new inflorescences with buds developing on them.
I'm amazed.
It was in bloom when I acquired it last October.
It may bloom 2 or more X times a year.
We'll see.
The "Barn Cat" tree mounted hybrids:
O. Equitants [Tolumnia] NoIDs
When I bought these, I asked about how well they would do if set out in the yard.
He shook his head and said that our climate in this area was too wet for them.
i set these two, while still in their pots, outside. They didn't do very well.
They got too wet and began to die back.
I decided to tie them on the top of a small cut-off wind damaged tree stump.
One looked to die off completely while the other seemed to languish badly.
I just took another look at them today.
The one that looked to be dead has several small new growths starting from the old one's base.
The one that looked to be languishing has 2 new inflorescences started.
If it continues to blooming I'll be ecstatic.
Miltoniopsis NoIDs
I have 2 of these mounted in the yard.
The one with darker colored flowers has a smaller clump of PBs and has formed a spike with one blossom on it.
It is not completely open yet. I'll get a pic when it is.
The second has a lighter colored flower, has a larger clump of PBs and looks good.
But, it has not yet begun any flower spikes.
I'm watching it closely.
Psychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildos'
1 spike with an open blossom,
1 spike with a growing bud, AND
1 NEW spike developing.
This one seemed to be doing poorly the last 2 to 3 months.
I think the cooler "winter" temps were slowing it down.
It seems to be starting a "spring" growth spurt.
Iwanagara Apple Blossom
When I first mounted this in it's tree, it was "attacked" by ants and it's blossoms quickly died off.
I've been treating our lot for LFAs for months now.
The LFAs seem to be gone and all the other types should be gone also, I hope.
The I. Apple Blossom has a new spike well started.
I'M hoping the ants and their livestock are gone so that it can bloom without hindrance now.
Epi. 'Paradise Orange'
It is a new acquisition and looks to be near blossoms opening.
Looking forward to seeing this one.
O. Speckled Spire 'Snowflake'
Has a new spike started.
That means that it'll bloom at least 2X a year.
I like orchids that bloom more than 1X a year!
Bulb. lobbii 'Kathy's Gold' X Dearei 'Elizabeth'
Has 1 new blossom forming so far.
I was wondering if the Bulbo. NoID I posted pics for earlier was one of these.
Now, I don't think so.
The bud looks to be shaped differently.
We'll see.
Epic. Hainying Orange 'Ching Hua'
It looks to have buds forming.
I am very curious about this one.
I can't wait for the blossoms to open.
Dendrobium Yukidaruma 'King'
This is one of my favorite Noblie type Dendrobiums.
This one is not very healthy yet.
It had been very badly neglected.
But, it is now putting out some blossoms and buds.
I am surprised and a bit disappointed in it so far.
The few blossoms that have opened so far are not white as they should be.
The flowers have a light yellowish cast to them.
We'll see how it develops.
Luckily, I live near the Yamamoto greenhouses.
If I need to, I can go ask them what is up with this plant.
Then, I have 3 different types of recumbent to pendant growth habit Dendrobium hybrids that are in from flowers opening to buds forming stages.
One looks to be a Nobile hybrid.
It has begun to open some blossoms.
Pics when they're mostly open.
I do not remember what the other 2's flowers look like.
When they do finally open, it'll be like Christmas all over again.
Well, that is all I could see this morning.
I probably missed a few.
I have so many scattered all over the trees on this acre lot that I can't remember where they're all at.
And, I need more!!!
