Orchids in the garden
Default Orchids in the garden

It's heading into winter here so there's not much to see, but I thought I'd share how I'm establishing my orchid collection out in my garden.

At the bottom of my garden there's a slope facing north (our sunny direction) which is quite rocky with trees of various sizes. I've been attaching orchids on trees, on rocks and in leaf litter between rocks.

The establishment process is fairly ugly but effective - I use newspaper to hold a small amount of bark and tie the orchids in the pocket of newspaper with biodegradable twine. Eventually the paper and twine rot away, leaving the orchid attached to the tree or rock.

That's pretty cool. I would totally do this given the space and climate.

Great idea with the newspaper! Your garden looks very interesting, I look forward to seeing how it develops with all the new additions.

The orchids look like they're attaching well. Love the boulder covered in orchids. Looking forward to your update.

I love it! I wish I could do this but we have that awful season of cold and ice each year. Sigh. What a great way to beautiful your garden!

Love this idea and while going back to look at it again, I noticed you're in climate zone 9b like me. Do these orchids tolerate the occasional freezing night temps of 32F/0C or lower? Do you cover them or do anything special for those freezes? Thanks for any suggestions. I'd love to try this.
