Oh Carp, the cold is coming....
The property I'm working at, is half prepped for the cold. The main structure's size is approx 50' X 50'. I already wrapped three sides with 6mil plastic. Now, I have to cover the top with it too. That and....
Put up a pole to hang 30-40 Vandas.
Build a nesting box for 3 large tortoises.
Build a raised platform for heaters.
And I have to do it all today. I'll post pics when I'm done..
btw, temps are expected into the low 40's tomorrow, high 30's the next morn (lows) with highs only near 60 degrees F.

Tomorrow will be the worst night, lke you said. Maybe into the 30's. We certainly don't see those temperatures very often. Good luck.

We've got one forecast at 20oF for tomorrow night! Hopefully it won't get that cold, but everything, including the bonsai AND tortoises are in and snug. Stay warm fellow Floridians!

I had no idea it was going to get cold until I saw this post! I just brought everyone inside! I started with the Vandas in bloom and the Dendrobiums, and then I thought what the heck, no sense in freezing any of them. So my poor wife has to deal with Vandas (albeit in bloom) hanging from the kitchen ceiling light, a bathtub full of all kinds, and the shower rod has all the smaller hanging chids. Whew. I hope it warms up after tomorrow night. Thanks for the heads up!

Pretty strange weather! And in this part of the world where we should have snow and freezing temps we have very little. It's been like this for ages so far this winter.

It's so mild here that there are flowers still blooming outside. I've never had flowers in January.
You have some of my favourites, Vandas and tortoises. If tortoises were less expensive I would likely have one. When I was a kid you could get one for $7

I'm in Tampa Bay, New Port Richey coastal area just N of Tarpon Springs. It was 30F this morning but no frost as it was too dry. The high yesterday was 47F with a stiff wind. Today was 53F and VERY dry. Many of my orchids were placed on the ground and covered with frost cloth. I do this every year. They pull through fine, even with last year's cold. My Vandas and Phals are either in the somewhat heated covered house OR inside. My Epidendrums flooded my Florida room as some are so big they cannot fit anywhere else. Here is a pic of one area! I hate winter, but it has been so warm it makes this cold event even more shocking :-)). Greg
