Outdoor Grow Area In Austin, Texas

109.9 in the SHADE here this afternoon. I took most my stuff inside,its horrible what its doing to my plants.

Temps have finally cooled off to the high eighties or low nineties here. I have to say that most of my plants grew just fine, but any that bloomed during the hot periods had flowers that were VERY distorted and mutated. A lot of Cattleyas are putting out second growths for the year at the moment. I'm expecting a VERY nice bounty of Catt flowers over the coming months! They didn't grow this fast even in Hawaii.

I'm happy to hear you are adjusting, Steve. I've had a really rough summer too. I'm so glad the temps are down, but we still need some RAIN!!!

W actually got drenched this past weekend for the 1st time since I moved here in January! lol Now if only the weather could do a follow up act.

Finally someone with temperatures similar to mine.
I have this tiny piece of outside space that is right between a wall and my house so I'm going to put a shade cloth on the top with one of its side on the wall and one on my house with hooks. Ill have vandas and cattleya's there. and my paphs and phals will be beside a windowsill right in front of that space.

Catt's should grow fine until they bloom. When they start to set buds bring them inside, otherwise the flowers come out all warped and distorted from the heat. The Paphs and Phals, however will die pretty quickly in the heat. My Paphs did ok, but did not really grow at all, so I don't think having them outside during that time was all that great. I think the Paphs will just straight up die. Finally, the Vandas can handle the heat, but you will need to water them like 5x a day to keep the aerial roots alive! If you can somehow get the humidity up, it might work better.

yeah I can water and the humidity is never less than 80% here. Its 97% right now...:P

Here in Florida any blooms I get during the summer don't last long. They wilt very quikly. Orchids come from many different environments. Some cattleyas come from lower and warmer altitudes in central and south america but many come from the mountains and don't do well in the heat. Phals don't seem to like the heat either although they also don't like cold. Vandas, encyclias and many of the smaller cattleyas seem to do well for me in the heat. Good luck.

Oh! I saw you were from Kuwait, so I just assumed it was super dry. lol I see your banner now. Hopefully someone from OB can put Pakistan in the country list.

Greetings all, I'm new to this board.

What do you do with your moths after a long spring-summer-fall outside? Is there any way to keep them outside? Probably with a heater and super sturdy greenhouse?
