OMG I just put them outside just about anywhere and they do great. The rest of them sorta require more shade less shade, more water less water. I do have some that usually are gifts from people hat think they are dead in spite of what I try to tell them. I put them someplace and say "good luck buddy, you're on your own". I bet if you did that with a vanda it would work wonders for you.
I'm curious why you thought I was hating on the Laelias though?

Florida with too many Royal Poincianas...sheesh. I only remember seeing one here. It's at the Fullerton Arboretum...and not sure if it's just me but it looks more feathery than even a jacaranda.

Both the Royal Poinciana and Michelia alba are on my want list. Which is more fragrant...alba or champaca?

swamper, the native oaks here aren't the best for orchids as they don't appreciate water during summer. They do look great though...with their dark green leaves starkly contrasted against the hills of golden grass.

peeweelovesbooks, too much bird poop?! For my orchids that would have been like a feeding frenzy. I've outsourced fertilizing my orchids to the birds...so I can literally say that feeding orchids is for the birds. Today I noticed that a bird pooped directly on my Trichoceros. It was a case of big poop on little orchid. The local Mockingbird probably gets full credit.

I love both Vandas and Mexican Laelias. Right now I'm watering my Laelias once every three days and my Vandas every other day. Since the temps currently stay above 55F I do all my watering at night. The Vandas are in plastic baskets covered in live Spanish Moss while the Laelias are mounted with no moss.

Just joking. You were so firm on your love for vandas I couldn't resist a little poke.

Sigh. I love vandas, you know? I find them gorgeous. But, I've killed every one of the ones I got, and the ones I didn't manage to kill I gave away to the ICU named Rolando, where they proceeded to produce 20 spikes per plant in thanks to their new fate.

Maybe Mokaras are in my future. I looooooooooooove those.

Hey there. I've read both are very fragrant--the white one having a different scent than the yellow. I bought two yellow babies and the heir made it--the spare didn't survive the trip.

Re: bird poop----the birds around my house misbehave. They poop on the cars, but they pick the hydroton off the pots. I've seen it happen. I would come home and find hydroton all over the place and when the housekeeper told me the birds perched on the pots and picked on the hydroton, I couldn't believe it---I witnessed it though.

Honestly, I don't know. Ummmmm.........I always thought it was too little sun--in light of the fact that I see lots of vanda setups here in SFL on the OB and it seems that they get lots of sun. When I tried to move mine to the sun they burned. Maybe I didn't water them enough, I don't know.

I think Roly has some in full sun in his yard and some underneath a tree, which are the same types of growing conditions I gave them.

My renantheras grow beautifully though. So I don't get it.
