itīs a good idea, the problem is that i donīt know wwhy we donīt have many (if any) shops that sell terrestrial orchids like those. they are protected by law, a few time ago there was a shop in spain, but it disappeared.
anyway i think they are too expensive, 20 bucks for a single bulb! too much, at least for me. i have seen ophrys sphegodes here, in my village and also orchism purpurea, they are really singular and spectacular, hundreds of them!

thanks King_of_orchid_growing

i think the ones which would fit best are pleiones and bletillas, any other option is welcome

I can't speak from experience when growing orchids in the conditions you are describing, however I do support you trying out certain orchids to see how well they do.
When I first told people I was growing close to 60 orchids of many genus' outdoor year round, many people said they wouldn't survive and that I hope I had orchid insurance. Well, I have lost very very few over 3 years. So despite what you hear sources say, don't be afraid to try yourself. Please be sure to let us know about your successes and mishaps!

Weebl - you have encouraged me to try growing more of mine outdoors year round - I am in San Jose - may get a bit chillier at night during winter, but read your post about plants surving just below freezing temps so I may have a go at it. I'm scared tho lol
I know I have a couple that were once un-intentionally left outside all winter and they were ok - one bloomed later that year, the first and only time it has for me. I'll have to decide which ones to risk

Small and compact cattleya's that have sophrinitis in their parentage seem go go as low as 32F or 0C for short periods.

Also Paph micranthum is a good choice as well.

My cymbidiums also sometimes get this cold, although I've heard they should be warmer. Most people seem to grow them down to frost conditions without any problems provided you have a solid roof.

I think laelia anceps (from Mexico) can withstand low temperatures. That's what I've read.

I think Neofinetia falcata could do (record temp in some known growing locations in Japan is -7 celcius), as well as the cool growing Coelogyne (nitida, cristata). If you keep them on the dry side (no moisture in the pot when there is frost) and protect them a bit for the night (with a blanket around the pot and leaves for example), they should do fine during the days even around 2-3 degrees celcius.

Hello Burgos,

I'm from Barcelona, it's not so cold in winter as in Burgos, but I grow Paphios, Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums kingianum, Zygopetallums and more in my garden with no problem.

Are you in infojardin? What's your name?

Good luck!!

Olivia
