Winter status report!

My chids all come into the house or garage for the winter. It will be 29 degrees low for Friday. Rest of the week lows will be in the thirties. This is southern Oregon.

We're nothing like Thailand, but the moderate climate here means winter minimums rarely dip below 35F. Right now outside I have Epi radicans, Arpophyllum giganteum, Scaphosepalum verrucosum and Helcia sanguinolenta all in bloom There's also a Dockrillia striolata forming flower buds.

I live in Central Florida and grow in a greenhouse but I have a lot of overflow with mainly large plants that are space hogs in the greenhouse. There are a number of den phals, some Cattleyas and a few Oncidiums, reed stem Epidendrums and a few Cymbidiums. We have had a very warm winter so far with mostly upper seventies and low eighties but we have also had a few nights in the mid thirties range (about 35F). All of the plants are protected from frost by large Oaks and nothing shows any cold damage, even the dendrobiums that are in bloom.

The snow is leaving... Hurray It has finally warmed up to normal temps and it is raining torrentially so far in last 24 hrs over 80cm. Maybe by Monday I can go back to work, I'm a landscaper and it's difficult to plant in the snow However; the snow has taken it's toll. The roof collapsed on the glass greenhouse on the property I rent. My plants weren't in it because it's too expensive to heat in freezing temps, but I had lots of other stuff in it which may be lost forever. I am just devastated by the loss of the greenhouse. Luckily my plant foster parents are willing to care for my plants until it's warm enough to put them outside. Hopefully that will be mid march.

So far so good. Had a S. ceruna take all winter until 1st week of Jan, then 2 of the new growths rotted. All the old growths are fine though. Brought it inside. It seems to be fine with a quick cold snap, but will not take extended periods of 40's min.

C. jenmanii seems to be more temp tolerant than its natural habitat would suggest, its doing fine outdoors.

I live in Central Florida and we've had a very comfortable winter so far with only a handful of night time temperatures dipping below 45 degrees with day time temps. ranging in the high 70's. This is great for the human population but the mild temperatures have fooled many of my plants. My citrus trees and several of my Chids think it's springtime and are initiating new growth. This concerns me a bit because it's not uncommon for our coolest of temps. to occur between the months of January and mid March. Some of my orchid collection require a consistant dip in the mercury in order to initiate spring time blooms. It's just been too mild for this type and I seriously doubt if those varieties will bloom this year.

I love freak heat waves in winter... High of 75 today. Haven't seen this warmth in months.

It looks like I'll soon be hauling my chids indoors. Our night time temperatures are expected to drop to near freezing in the next day or two and my plants have been behaving as though it's Springtime. The last several weeks of consistant balmy temperatures have caused the Dends. to begin sending out new roots and some chids are initiating the growth of young pseudobulbs. A few of my favorite babies are now displaying their lovely blooms and there are others that have tender young spikes developing. A few of my Cattleyas have sheaths that are ready to burst open with the emergence of their long anticipated buds. With all this Orchid activity, any threat of potential low temps. throws me into a tizzy and causes me to behave like an over protective mom.

It was 74F just north of you in San Francisco, a record high for this date.
