Sue , do you cut off the spike after it's bloomed LOL seriously they look horrible after the bloom and mine has a bunch of these dead things on it. I don't wanna cut them off and have to treat them or anything.

LOL...they do look dreadful when they're finished, don't they?

I cut the bloom down into the nook it sprouted from when they get ugly

This plant has two more bloom spikes coming along nicely and another leaf started!

Boy, how I love the Bird of Paradise!!! I used to have two kinds in my tropical collection but they just got way too big for my space and I had to give them up. Nice growing!! Have you ever seen the nicolai species? Really different colours than these!

I love Bird of Paradise flowers. The first one I ever saw growing was in Hawaii. We bought an armfull of blooms to take home with us. Now if my kids send me cut flowers, very often a Bird of Paradise is in there somewhere.

Sure wish I could grow one in Michigan

Nice! I have a Bird of Paradise that I planted in my back yard last summer. It was just a baby, and didn't bloom last summer, but it's growing like mad and I have high hopes for this year!

Keep going Nicole. It took my bird of paradise 4 years to bloom from a tiny 15Rupee 10inch plant to a 3 feet two bloom stage. I nearly gave up on it. Thank god I persevered.

Hi,
You live in India and if happen to visit Singapore please visit the sanctuary for birds, there you would see the real bird Bird of Paradise.
The bird is out of this world,it is a God's gift to this world.I visited India in2003 and had trip to Singapore.I would post the images soon.

Swamper, the real Birds of Paradise are a group of birds related to Crows, which live in Asia (Indonesia, Papua-New Guinea up to Australia). They are amazing birds, and after seen the males, you can easily understand why they are called birds of paradise As in most birds, females are not very attractive, however the males always have espectacular colours and and make a great display inorder to attract the females.

here you can see some of them:

The Strelitzia plant is called Bird of Paradise, because the inforescence is supposed to resemble this one

and since I was in the mood in this video you can also see some mannakins, which are from south and central america, and are my favorite birds colours and behavour can be compared to those ofthe Birds of Paradise
