Luckily a new growth came out and the old pbulb is still a but unsighly, but it is still growing and making flowers so I guess it is OK (that was about 2 or so years ago). What medium do you use? Mine is in bark and some spag. The weirdest thing is that I had this plant once before, as a sickly thing I was trying to save but lost it to some mealie bugs. I swear that the vegetative growth was much shorter then my new plant and the flowers hung down like the pendulous type of orchids. Was it just the way this plant was grown? It had been in a basket with some lava rock, spag on top and kind of laying the plant sideways instead of straight up. Any thoughts on that?
Hey Jenn,

Your're welcome...it is my pleasure to be able to help. I grow mine in a mixture of medium aliflor, coconut husk and charcoal...I think there's a little sponge rock in there too. The foliage growth on mine is about 4 to 5 inches tall, and the one mature spike on it now is about 9 inches long, and it is somewhat pendulous, with several side branches.

I have seen several...well maybe only a few...of these guys grown on mounts (sideways), and they look like they grow well this way, although mine is in a clay pot. maybe the sphag on yours is to help hold moisture, as it will dry quickly in a basket with just lava rock.

Maybe when you get the camera going I could give you a better analysis of your plant.

David,

The one I was mentioning was actually the previous one that I attempted to save, but it didn't make it. The new plant (as pictured) is more upright. It does appear that there will be some side branches though, but the guy at the store said this type doesn't really do this. Well, I am hopeful! My new plant is only in a tiny little 1 inch square pot with one tiny growth and the flowering growth which is probably about 5 inches tall. Thanks for the help.

Jenn,

That is a beautiful Lava Burst. Mine doesn't have a varietal name like yours, but it was the same size as yours is when I received it in August of 2007. Here are pics of it today...so you can see they grow quickly.

The first shows the whole plant. The second is a close-up showing all 6 spikes...of course the blooming spike is truncated, but you can see that in the full plant pose.

You got it! That is pretty good considering how little you could see of it. Here is a little better picture of it for you from yesterday also...
