Default Hail to the orchids.....literally

Pun intended. Earlier this year, I took advantage of some beautiful weather and gave my orchids a few days outside on the deck. Until a storm came up after dark and rattled the house. I watched the plants get pounded but thought better of going outside to rescue them. A hard choice, but that stuff can dent cars.

Anyway, there were some injuries but thankfully, everyone survived.

Another lesson learned

I posted a while back as to why I would never place any more orchids outside. The hail storm I experienced came with full sun. I lost all my Phals and many others as well. I have vowed to keep mine indoors, no matter what. Hope everything worked out for you.

I see what you mean about the hail. I do hang some outside but pull in when I know there is a storm of any kind coming. Hope yours pull thru okay. It could have been worse.

I am also reluctant to place any orchids in open areas, but I do have them hanging from under the deck and also under the eaves of an eastern exposure. Whenever the weather is threatening, I place them further under the deck or bring them in the house until things calm down. I never place my phals ( or other tender leaves) outside, but do have the vandaceous, some catts and cyms out to enjoy the summer. My phals, minis, dens and others stay inside, as well as any that might be summer bloomers (don't want to risk the flowers). At least I have some control over the culture.

And Ross, I'm loving my minis more and more! Excellent plants! - Lynn

Sorry about your chids. I know they'll eventually bounce back. Keep a good eye out for those storms.
