I want to put my phals outside, but I am wondering how people don't get crown rot when it rains. I have mine in pots, not mounted, so the water wouldn't drain out. Some of mine naturally drain the water out of the crown, but in other, I need to tip it out. What do you do? I don't like keeping mine inside because of the airconditioning , and I want the temperature change from day to night
Thanks!!
Hi
I have a number of phals both mounted and potted. I have potted ones in a clear plastic pot in a basket to hang. Here are a couple pics so you can get the idea.
Hope it helps. You would have to make sure to set the plant in the basket so the leaves give you a path for the water to drain off. I'm still careful when I water doing so early in the morning so they can dry off.

Hi there!! I didn't know if you had any luck with your mounts, but I wanted to show you mine, that I did. And man!! Are they ever happy with it!! I took them out of old yucky pots, and mounted them sideways, and put them out in my FL weather, from my greenhouse!! And they are growing like weeds!!!
And these pics are from the very first day that I mounted them and moved them outside. It's been about a month now, and will all the FL rain we've been getting, WOW!! Soooo many happy roots grabbing on to the wood already!! I'm almost ready to cut off the ties on them!!
Loved all the outdoor mounted phals and the phals outside in slab boxes. Wish i lived in your corners of the earth I however have a covered balcony. South-west afternoon exposure. When would it be appropriate to put out the phals, and when would i bring them back in to go under the Light stand Would love to hear your thoughts

I would put your phals out as long as the temps didn't go below 40ish. More important than the temp is the wind damage that can happen. You might have high 40s but cold winds so be aware of that. If your area is protected from wind then I would enjoy.
When I lived in Philadelphia all tropicals stayed in until it was nice enough to have the outside temp close to inside temp with doors/windows open so adjustment was easier for my guys. Same for the fall when I brought them back in.
We don't get too cold here in Boca Raton (Close to Ft. Lauderdale) but once in a while it drops to the 30s. They all come inside esp if winds are 15mph+. The phals seem to like having a cooler temp then bloom like crazy.
I was looking at your shadehouse last night and my hubby was nearby. I showed him what your hubby did for you "hint, hint" and he said you have a "REALLY NICE HUSBAND" I had wanted to put the same lattice on my south wall that now has another 11' pole with hanging everything, catts, vandas, phals. That way I could use more of the unused wall It was his idea for the pole so maybe I'll just have to find another space???????Where???
