Schomburgkia, Vanilla planifolia in Quintana Roo, México
I was recently at a meeting along the Mayan coast in the state of Quintana Roo, México. These plants were growing along the perimeter road of the resort, in naturalistic swathes of forest. I don't know whether it was natural forest or secondary. I also don't know whether the plants were put there by nature or human hand.
The Schomburgkia was about 9 feet / 3 meters from the ground. The cropped image is from the original image. It was the only such plant I saw.
The Vanilla planifolia was dangling in the underbrush. There were three separate individuals.
I saw no other orchids.

Cool! Looks like the Schombo is on oak bark and is not as sunny as I would otherwise expect. Or maybe that's related to the time of day the picture was taken?

Photo was about 8 in the morning. The plant is on the south side of a tree, facing the road, so it was in sun soon after this photo, and would remain in full sun for much of the day. This is within a few hundred meters of the beach, so there is usually some breeze.
There are many tropical oaks in the Yucatán forest, but I wasn't close enough to the leaves on this one to be sure.
